1. Confirm access at both ends
Agree the move-out and key-handover arrangements for the current property, then confirm when you can enter the new one. Check lift booking, loading access, parking and building rules at both addresses. A storage or transport reservation does not automatically reserve a loading bay. Share only the necessary access information with the supplier and use its approved contact channel.
2. Decide what is travelling with you
Walk through the home with an inventory rather than estimating from the number of rooms. Mark furniture to keep, items to store and anything to remove before the move. Measure bulky pieces and the narrowest doorways or turns on the route. If an item will not fit the next home, deciding early can avoid paying to transport and store it while you work out what to do.
3. Arrange a plan for any date gap
If access dates do not overlap, arrange where you will stay and which belongings you need with you. Keep a separate overnight bag, chargers, necessary medicines and important documents. Ask the storage provider about minimum billing, retrieval arrangements and notice for return delivery. Make the essentials available without needing to unpack the stored load.
4. Pack by destination as well as room
Label each box with a simple reference number, room and destination: new home, storage or carry with you. Keep a private inventory of its contents. Avoid writing sensitive details or valuables on the outside of a box. Use cartons suitable for the load and stay within their stated limits. Smaller boxes can be easier to manage for dense items such as books; do not rely on that rule instead of the box rating.
5. Prepare furniture using its own instructions
Find the manufacturer’s dismantling instructions before removing parts. Photograph the assembled item and label the fasteners in a sealed bag. Keep that bag with the matching component without taping directly onto a delicate finish. Take professional advice for heavy, fragile or awkward pieces. Do not dismantle a supplied landlord fitting or disconnect fixed equipment without the appropriate permission and help.
6. Record condition before loading
Photograph furniture and any existing marks, then compare the number of boxes and loose pieces against your inventory. Agree who is loading, how fragile items are handled and where any exceptions are recorded. Retain the transport or storage receipt. CCTV, a locked unit or careful packaging is not a substitute for checking the cover and liability terms that actually apply.
7. Leave a handover folder
Keep your agreed handover time, relevant correspondence, meter photographs where appropriate and any record of the property’s condition together. Put back original parts or fittings you were authorised to remove and complete the agreed cleaning or restoration. Check your lease and local requirements rather than treating this checklist as a rule about deposit deductions or notice periods.
8. Make the first night easy
Keep bedding, towels, a small set of kitchen items and the tools needed for basic furniture assembly easy to reach. Check the condition and piece count at delivery before signing any acceptance. Note missing or damaged items through the supplier’s stated process. When packing for storage first, mark this first-night set separately so the return load can be unloaded in a useful order.
Find supplies without buying blindly
EasyStore’s packing-supplies page is a group-brand option for shoppers in its service region. Choose boxes and protection for the objects you actually have, then confirm current stock, size and delivery arrangements. A bundle can be convenient, but compare its contents with your inventory so you do not pay for materials you cannot use.
