Start with the opening
Measure width and height at several points. Record whether the window slides, swings inward or outward, and how far the handles project. A screen must let the existing window and any required escape route work normally. Check the supplier measurement instructions before choosing a size.
1. Magnetic mesh systems
A removable mesh section can be convenient for seasonal use or access to a window. Examine how the surrounding frame or tape attaches to the building. Check corner sealing, handle clearance and replacement mesh availability. Detachable mesh does not mean residue-free removal of the fixing.
2. Adhesive hook-and-loop mesh
These systems may offer a simple way to attach mesh to an appropriate frame. Compare the approved surface, mounting width, cleaning method and removal instructions. Flaking paint, damp areas and rough surfaces can be unsuitable. Test only as directed by the manufacturer and with any permission required.
3. Tension-fit or adjustable panels
An adjustable panel may suit a particular window shape without adhesive. Check the minimum and maximum dimensions, seal at the edges and method that prevents the panel moving. Do not assume a product for a sliding window will work with a hinged one.
4. Existing framed screens
Before buying a new system, ask whether a missing or damaged original screen can be repaired. Photograph the frame and fixing points. A replacement made for the existing fittings may be a better match than a universal kit. Obtain approval for repairs that affect the property.
5. Professionally fitted screens
A permanent screen may be appropriate when the property owner agrees. Get the fixing method, frame colour, responsibility for the cost and future maintenance clear before work starts. Security-screen work is a different decision from ordinary insect mesh.
The comparison checklist
Compare opening compatibility, usable mesh area, attachment method, surface conditions, insect size, cleaning, replacement parts and removal. Fine mesh can change airflow and visibility; ask the supplier for the specification rather than inferring it from a photograph.
A safety boundary worth keeping
Ordinary insect screens do not establish protection against falls, forced entry or escaping pets. Keep required window restrictors and safety devices in place. Do not use stronger-sounding mesh names as evidence of containment. Where safety is the purpose, seek a system designed and substantiated for that purpose.
